Andwhentherewasnomeattogive,Mit-sahwouldkeeptheteamatadistanceandmakebelievetogivemeattoLip-lip.
WhiteFangtookkindlytothework. Hehadtravelledagreaterdistancethantheotherdogsintheyieldingofhimselftotheruleofthegods,andhehadlearnedmorethoroughlythefutilityofopposingtheirwill. Inaddition,thepersecutionhehadsufferedfromthepackhadmadethepacklesstohimintheschemeofthings,andmanmore. Hehadnotlearnedtobedependentonhiskindforcompanionship. Besides,Kichewaswell-nighforgotten;andthechiefoutletofexpressionthatremainedtohimwasintheallegiancehetenderedthegodshehadacceptedasmasters. Soheworkedhard,learneddiscipline,andwasobedient. Faithfulnessandwillingnesscharacterisedhistoil. Theseareessentialtraitsofthewolfandthewild-dogwhentheyhavebecomedomesticated,andthesetraitsWhiteFangpossessedinunusualmeasure.
AcompanionshipdidexistbetweenWhiteFangandtheotherdogs,butitwasoneofwarfareandenmity. Hehadneverlearnedtoplaywiththem.
