Thegreenslimeontherocksalonetestifiedthatlifewasnotextinct. Ashallowsandbankhadappearedintheseaandthewaterhadrecededfromthebeach. IfanciedIsawsomeblackobjectfloppingaboutuponthisbank,butitbecamemotionlessasIlookedatit,andIjudgedthatmyeyehadbeendeceived,andthattheblackobjectwasmerelyarock. Thestarsintheskywereintenselybrightandseemedtometotwinkleverylittle.
‘SuddenlyInoticedthatthecircularwestwardoutlineofthesunhadchanged; thataconcavity,abay,hadappearedinthecurve. Isawthisgrowlarger. ForaminuteperhapsIstaredaghastatthisblacknessthatwascreepingovertheday,andthenIrealizedthataneclipsewasbeginning. EitherthemoonortheplanetMercurywaspassingacrossthesun’sdisk. Naturally,atfirstItookittobethemoon,butthereismuchtoinclinemetobelievethatwhatIreallysawwasthetransitofaninnerplanetpassingveryneartotheearth.
‘Thedarknessgrewapace; acoldwindbegantoblowinfresheninggustsfromtheeast,andtheshoweringwhiteflakesintheairincreasedinnumber. Fromtheedgeoftheseacamearippleandwhisper. Beyondtheselifelesssoundstheworldwassilent. Silent? Itwouldbehardtoconveythestillnessofit. Allthesoundsofman,thebleatingofsheep,thecriesofbirds,thehumofinsects,thestirthatmakesthebackgroundofourlives—allthatwasover. Asthedarknessthickened,theeddyingflakesgrewmoreabundant,dancingbeforemyeyes;andthecoldoftheairmoreintense.
