HithertoIhadmerelythoughtmyselfimpededbythechildishsimplicityofthelittlepeople,andbysomeunknownforceswhichIhadonlytounderstandtoovercome; buttherewasanaltogethernewelementinthesickeningqualityoftheMorlocks—asomethinginhumanandmalign. InstinctivelyIloathedthem. Before,Ihadfeltasamanmightfeelwhohadfallenintoapit: myconcernwaswiththepitandhowtogetoutofit. NowIfeltlikeabeastinatrap,whoseenemywouldcomeuponhimsoon.

Theystillpossessedtheearthonsufferance:sincetheMorlocks,subterraneanforinnumerablegenerations,hadcomeatlasttofindthedaylitsurfaceintolerable.
