Suchofthemasweresoconstitutedastobemiserableandrebelliouswoulddie; and,intheend,thebalancebeingpermanent,thesurvivorswouldbecomeaswelladaptedtotheconditionsofundergroundlife,andashappyintheirway,astheUpper-worldpeopleweretotheirs. Asitseemedtome,therefinedbeautyandtheetiolatedpallorfollowednaturallyenough.

This,Imustwarnyou,wasmytheoryatthetime. IhadnoconvenientciceroneinthepatternoftheUtopianbooks. Myexplanationmaybeabsolutelywrong. Istillthinkitisthemostplausibleone.
