Onthemorrowhedeparted,andreachedCamelotbynoon,wherethekingandqueenrejoicedtoseehim,andthekingmadehimEarl;andMerlinprophesiedthattheseadventureswerebutlittletothethingsheshouldachievehereafter.
NowwhileSirGawainandSirTorhadfulfilledtheirquests,KingPellinorepursuedtheladywhomtheknighthadseizedawayfromthewedding-feast.Andasherodethroughthewoods,hesawinavalleyafairyoungdamselsittingbyawell-side,andawoundedknightlyinginherarms,andKingPellinoresalutedherashepassedby.
Assoonassheperceivedhimshecriedout,“Help,helpme,knight,forourLord’ssake!”ButPellinorewasfartooeagerinhisquesttostayorturn,althoughshecriedahundredtimestohimforhelp;atwhichsheprayedtoheavenhemighthavesuchsoreneedbeforehediedasshehadnow.Andpresentlythereafterherknightdiedinherarms;andshe,forgriefandloveslewherselfwithhissword.
ButKingPellinorerodeontillhemetapoormanandaskedhimhadheseenaknightpassbythatwayleadingbyforcealadywithhim.
“Yea,surely,”saidtheman,“andgreatlydidshemoanandcry;butevennowanotherknightisfightingwithhimtodeliverthelady;rideonandthoushaltfindthemfightingstill.”
AtthatKingPellinorerodeswiftlyon,andcametowherehesawthetwoknightsfighting,hardbywheretwopavilionsstood.Andwhenhelookedinoneofthemhesawtheladythatwashisquest,andwithherthetwosquiresofthetwoknightswhofought.
“Fairlady,”saidhe,“yemustcomewithmeuntoArthur’scourt.
