           “Joseph,areyougoingtoobeymeorareyouNOT?”saidAnne.

           Abolderandmoreself-possessedladthanJoeSloanewouldhavebeenoverawedbyhertoneandthedangerousflashofhereyes.ThiswasanewAnnewhomnoneofherpupilshadeverseenbefore.Joe,withanagonizedglanceatSt.Clair,wenttothestove,openedthebig,squarefrontdoor,andthrewtheblueandwhiteparcelin,beforeSt.Clair,whohadsprungtohisfeet,couldutteraword.Thenhedodgedbackjustintime.

           ForafewmomentstheterrifiedoccupantsofAvonleaschooldidnotknowwhetheritwasanearthquakeoravolcanicexplosionthathadoccurred.TheinnocentlookingparcelwhichAnnehadrashlysupposedtocontainMrs.Hiram’snutcakesreallyheldanassortmentoffirecrackersandpinwheelsforwhichWarrenSloanehadsenttotownbySt.ClairDonnell’sfatherthedaybefore,intendingtohaveabirthdaycelebrationthatevening.
