           ArthurPymwasthennavigatingbeyondtheeighty-fourthdegreeofsouthlatitude.ItwasthebeginningofMarch,thatistosay,theantarcticwinterwasapproaching.Fiveorsixislands,whichitwasprudenttoavoid,werevisibletowardsthewest.ArthurPym’sopinionwasthatthetemperaturewouldbecomemoremildbydegreesastheyapproachedthepole.Theytiedtogethertwowhiteshirtswhichtheyhadbeenwearing,andhoistedthemtododutyasasail.Atsightoftheseshirtsthenative,whoansweredtothenameofNu-Nu,wasterrified.Foreightdaysthisstrangevoyagecontinued,favouredbyamildwindfromthenorth,inpermanentdaylight,onaseawithoutafragmentofice,indeed,owingtothehighandeventemperatureofthewater,noicehadbeenseensincetheparallelofBennetIsland.
