           Themasterandthedogweredesperatelythirsty,andwhenArthurstretchedouthishand,hefoundTigerlyingonhisback,withhispawsupandhishaironend.HethenfeltTigerallover,andhishandencounteredastringpassedroundthedog’sbody.Astripofpaperwasfastenedtothestringunderhisleftshoulder.

           ArthurPymhadreachedthelaststageofweakness.Intelligencewasalmostextinct.However,afterseveralfruitlessattemptstoprocurealight,hesucceededinrubbingthepaperwithalittlephosphorus—(thedetailsgiveninEdgarPoe’snarrativearecuriouslyminuteatthispoint)—andthenbytheglimmerthatlastedlessthanasecondhediscernedjustsevenwordsattheendofasentence.Terrifyingwordsthesewere:blood—remainhidden—lifedependsonit.

           Whatdidthesewordsmean?LetusconsiderthesituationofArthurPym,atthebottomoftheship’shold,betweentheboardsofachest,withoutlight,withoutwater,withonlyardentliquortoquenchhisthirst!Andthiswarningtoremainhidden,precededbytheword“blood“—thatsupremeword,kingofwords,sofullofmystery,ofsuffering,ofterror!HadtherebeenstrifeonboardtheGrampus?Hadthebrigbeenattackedbypirates?Hadthecrewmutinied?Howlonghadthisstateofthingslasted?

           Itmightbethoughtthatthemarvellouspoethadexhaustedtheresourcesofhisimaginationintheterrorofsuchasituation;butitwasnotso.
