           Anhourlater,ArthurPymbegantofeeltherollingandpitchingofthebrig.Hewasveryuncomfortableinthechest,sohegotoutofit,andinthedark,whileholdingonbyaropewhichwasstretchedacrosstheholdtothetrapofhisfriend’scabin,hewasviolentlysea-sickinthemidstofthechaos.Thenhecreptbackintohischest,ate,andfellasleep.

           SeveraldayselapsedwithoutthereappearanceofAugustusBarnard.Eitherhehadnotbeenabletogetdownintotheholdagain,orhehadnotventuredtodoso,fearingtobetraythepresenceofArthurPym,andthinkingthemomentforconfessingeverythingtohisfatherhadnotyetcome.

           ArthurPym,meanwhile,wasbeginningtosufferfromthehotandvitiatedatmosphereofthehold.Terriblenightmarestroubledhissleep.Hewasconsciousofraving,andinvainsoughtsomeplaceamidthemassofcargowherehemightbreathealittlemoreeasily.InoneofthesefitsofdeliriumheimaginedthathewasgrippedintheclawsofanAfricanlion,(1)andinaparoxysmofterrorhewasabouttobetrayhimselfbyscreaming,whenhelostconsciousness.
