           AndyetIhadnotoncepronouncedthenameofDirkPeters,noralludedtoDirkPeters’proposal.

           IwasaskingmyselfwhetherIhadorhadnotsucceededininspiringmycompanionswithmyownbelief,whenCaptainLenGuyspoke:

           “DirkPeters,”hesaid,“doyouassertthatArthurPymandyouafteryourdeparturefromTsalalIslandsawlandinthedirectionofthesouth?”

           “Yes,land,”answeredthehalf-breed.“Islandsorcontinent—understandme—andIbelievethatPym,poorPym,iswaitingthereuntilaidcomestohim.”

           “There,whereperhapsWilliamGuyandhiscompanionsarealsowaiting,”saidI,tobringbackthediscussiontomorepracticalpoints.

           CaptainLenGuyreflectedforalittlewhile,andthenspoke:

           “Isittrue,DirkPeters,”heasked,“thatbeyondtheeighty-fourthparallelthehorizonisshutinbythatcurtainofvapourwhichisdescribedinthenarrative?Haveyouseen—seenwithyourowneyes—thosecataractsintheair,thatgulfinwhichArthurPym’sboatwaslost?”

           Thehalf-breedlookedfromonetotheotherofus,andshookhisbighead.

           “Idon’tknow,”hesaid.
