Constantandminuteprecautionswereindispensablealldayonthe16th,forthehelm,whichwasloosenedbymercilessblowsandbumps,wasindangerofbeingunshipped.
Theseamammalshadnotforsakentheseseas.Whaleswereseeningreatnumbers,anditwasafairy-likespectaclewhenseveralofthemspoutedsimultaneously.Withfin-backsandhump-backs,porpoisesofcolossalsizeappeared,andtheseHearneharpoonedcleverlywhentheycamewithinrange.Thefleshofthesecreatureswasmuchrelishedonboard,afterEndicotthadcookeditinhisbestmanner.
AsfortheusualAntarcticbirds,petrels,pigeons,andcormorants,theypassedinscreamingflocks,andlegionsofpenguins,rangedalongtheedgesoftheice-fields,watchedtheevolutionsoftheschooner.Thesepenguinsaretherealinhabitantsofthesedismalsolitudes,andnaturecouldnothavecreatedatypemoresuitedtothedesolationoftheglacialzone.
