WhenNandahadsupportedLangwideretoapositioninfrontofcupboardNo.17,thePrincessunlockedthedoorwithherrubykeyandafterhandingheadNo.9,whichshehadbeenwearing,tothemaid,shetookNo.17fromitsshelfandfittedittoherneck.Ithadblackhairanddarkeyesandalovelypearl-and-whitecomplexion,andwhenLangwidereworeitsheknewshewasremarkablybeautifulinappearance.
TherewasonlyonetroublewithNo.17;thetemperthatwentwithit(andwhichwashiddensomewhereundertheglossyblackhair)wasfiery,harshandhaughtyintheextreme,anditoftenledthePrincesstodounpleasantthingswhichsheregrettedwhenshecametowearherotherheads.
Butshedidnotrememberthistoday,andwenttomeetherguestsinthedrawing-roomwithafeelingofcertaintythatshewouldsurprisethemwithherbeauty.
