"IguessIwon’tlook,"remarkedtheshaggyman,sadly,forhedidn’tlikehisdonkeyhead,either.WhilePollyandDorothytriedtocomfortButton-Bright,theshaggymansatdownneartheedgeofthepool,wherehisimagecouldnotbereflected,andstaredatthewaterthoughtfully.Ashedidthishenoticedasilverplatefastenedtoarockjustunderthesurfaceofthewater,andonthesilverplatewasengravedthesewords:

"Ah!"criedtheshaggyman,springingtohisfeetwitheagerjoy;"we’vefounditatlast."
"Foundwhat?"askedDorothy,runningtohim.
"TheTruthPond.Now,atlast,Imaygetridofthisfrightfulhead;forweweretold,youremember,thatonlytheTruthPondcouldrestoretomemyproperface."
"Me,too!"shoutedButton-Bright,trottinguptothem.
"Ofcourse,"saidDorothy."Itwillcureyoubothofyourbadheads,Iguess.Isn’titluckywefoundit?"
"Itis,indeed,"repliedtheshaggyman."IhateddreadfullytogotoPrincessOzmalookinglikethis;andshe’stohaveabirthdaycelebration,too."
Justthenasplashstartledthem,forButton-Bright,inhisanxietytoseethepoolthatwould"cure"him,hadsteppedtooneartheedgeandtumbledheelsoverheadintothewater.Downhewent,outofsightentirely,sothatonlyhissailorhatfloatedonthetopoftheTruthPond.
