Hehadinventedamachinetoblowhugesoap-bubbles,asbigasballoons,andthismachinewashiddenundertheplatformsothatonlytherimofthebigclaypipetoproducethebubblesshowedabovetheflooring.Thetankofsoapsuds,andtheair-pumpstoinflatethebubbles,wereoutofsightbeneath,sothatwhenthebubblesbegantogrowupontheflooroftheplatformitreallyseemedlikemagictothepeopleofOz,whoknewnothingabouteventhecommonsoap-bubblesthatourchildrenblowwithapennyclaypipeandabasinofsoap-and-water.
TheWizardhadinventedanotherthing.Usually,soap-bubblesarefrailandbursteasily,lastingonlyafewmomentsastheyfloatintheair;buttheWizardaddedasortofgluetohissoapsuds,whichmadehisbubblestough;and,asthegluedriedrapidlywhenexposedtotheair,theWizard’sbubbleswerestrongenoughtofloatforhourswithoutbreaking.
Hebeganbyblowing—bymeansofhismachineryandair-pumps—severallargebubbleswhichheallowedtofloatupwardintothesky,wherethesunshinefelluponthemandgavethemiridescenthuesthatweremostbeautiful.Thisarousedmuchwonderanddelightbecauseitwasanewamusementtoeveryonepresent—exceptperhapsDorothyandButton-Bright,andeventheyhadneverseensuchbig,strongbubblesbefore.
TheWizardthenblewabunchofsmallbubblesandafterwardblewabigbubblearoundthemsotheywereleftinthecenterofit;thenheallowedthewholemassofprettyglobestofloatintotheairanddisappearinthefardistantsky.
"Thatisreallyfine!"declaredSantaClaus,wholovedtoysandprettythings.
