           “Thefreeness!”herepeated.“Yes,thefreeness!”

           “Yes—itwasthefreeness,”heanswered.

           Webrushedthroughtheheatherandthebracken,andflower-bellsshookshowersofradiantdropsuponus.Themistwaveredandsometimesliftedbeforeus,andopenedupmysticvistastoveilthemagainafewminuteslater.Thesuntriedtobreakthrough,andsometimeswewalkedinagoldenhaze.

           Wefellintosilence.NowandthenIglancedsidewiseatmycompanionaswemadeoursoundlesswayoverthethickmoss.Helookedsostrongandbeautiful.Histallbodywassofine,hisshoulderssobroadandsplendid!Howcoulditbe!Howcoulditbe!Ashetrampedbesidemehewasthinkingdeeply,andheknewheneednottalktome.Thatmademeglad—thatheshouldknowmesowellandfeelmesonear.Thatwaswhathefeltwhenhewaswithhismother,thatsheunderstoodandthatattimesneitherofthemneededwords.
