           MacNairn’slowvoicesaidoutoftheshadownearme,“TheFearwouldbegoneforever.”

           “Perhapsthewholemysteryisassimpleasthis,”saidherson’svoice“assimpleasthis:thatastherearetonesofmusictoofinetoberegisteredbythehumanear,sotheremaybevibrationsoflightnottobeseenbythehumaneye;formandcoloraswellassounds;justbeyondearthlyperception,andyetasrealasourselves,asformedasourselves,onlyexistinginthatotherdimension.”

           TherewasanintensenesswhichwasalmostanoteofanguishinMrs.MacNairn’sanswer,eventhoughhervoicewasverylow.Iinvoluntarilyturnedmyheadtolookather,thoughofcourseitwastoodarktoseeherface.Ifeltsomehowasifherhandswerewrungtogetherinherlap.

           “Oh!”shesaid,“ifoneonlyhadsomeshadowofaproofthatthemysteryisonlythatWEcannotsee,thatWEcannothear,thoughtheyarereallyquitenearus,withus—theoneswhoseemtohavegoneawayandwhomwefeelwecannotlivewithout.Ifoncewecouldbesure!TherewouldbenoFear—therewouldbenone!”

           “Dearest”—heoftencalledher“Dearest,”andhisvoicehadawonderfulsoundinthedarkness;itwascaressandstrength,anditseemedtospeaktoherofthingstheyknewwhichIdidnot—“wehavevowedtoeachotherthatweWILLbelievethereisnoreasonforTheFear.Itwasavowbetweenus.”

           “Yes!Yes!”shecried,breathlessly,“butsometimes,Hector—sometimes—”

           “MissMuircarriedoesnotfeelit—”

           “Pleasesay‘Ysobel’!”Ibrokein.“Pleasedo.
