           Theylurkedformeintheforestglades;leapedup,striking,undermyfeet;squirmedoffthroughthedrygrassoracrossnakedpatchesofrock;orpursuedmeintothetree-tops,encirclingthetrunkswiththeirgreatshiningbodies,drivingmehigherandhigherorfartherandfartheroutonswayingandcracklingbranches,thegroundadizzydistancebeneathme.Snakes!—withtheirforkedtongues,theirbeadyeyesandglitteringscales,theirhissingandtheirrattling—didInotalreadyknowthemfartoowellonthatdayofmyfirstcircuswhenIsawthesnake-charmerliftthemup?
