DarrowhadoftenwonderedwhatpossibilitiesofcommuniontherecouldhavebeenbetweenMr.Leathandhiswife.Nowheconcludedthattherehadprobablybeennone.Mrs.Leath’swordsgavenohintofherhusband’shavingfailedtojustifyherchoice;butherveryreticencebetrayedher.Shespokeofhimwithakindofimpersonalseriousness,asifhehadbeenacharacterinanovelorafigureinhistory;andwhatshesaidsoundedasthoughithadbeenlearnedbyheartandslightlydulledbyrepetition.
