Thenightwasbothmoonlessandstar-less—Ihadarrangedallthat—whentheboatspushedofffromthesideofourvessel,andmadetheirwaytowardtheshipthat,unfortunatelyforitself,hadbeensingledoutbyFatetocarrymehomeintriumph.Iwasinexcellentspirits,and,indeed,asIsteppedovertheside,alawlessideacrossedmymind,ofdiscoveringanotherPrincessonboardthefrigate—aFrenchonethistime;Ihadheardthatthatsortwasrathernice.ButIabandonedthenotionatonce,recollectingthattheheroesofallhistoryhadalwaysbeennotedfortheirunswervingconstancy.
TheFrenchcaptainwassnuginbedwhenIclamberedinthroughhiscabinwindowandheldanakedcutlasstohisthroat.Naturallyhewassurprisedandconsiderablyalarmed,tillIdischargedoneofmysetspeechesathim,pointingoutthatmymenalreadyhadhiscrewunderhatchways,thathisvesselwaseventhenbeingtowedoutofharbour,andthat,onhisacceptingthesituationwithagoodgrace,hispersonandprivatepropertywouldbetreatedwithalltherespectduetotherepresentativeofagreatnationforwhichIentertainedfeelingsoftheprofoundestadmirationandregardandallthatsortofthing.
