Selina’ssubject,quiteunaccountably,happenedtobenavalhistory.Thereisnolayingdownrulesastosubjects;youjustpossessthem—orrather,theypossessyou—andtheirgenesisorprotoplasmisrarelytobetrackeddown.Selinahadneversomuchasseenthesea;butforthatmatterneitherhadIeversetfootontheAmericancontinent,theby-waysofwhichIknewsointimately.AndjustasI,ifsetdownwithoutwarninginthemiddleoftheRockyMountains,wouldhavebeenperfectlyathome,soSelina,ifageniehaddroppedhersuddenlyonPortsmouthHard,couldhavegivenpointstomostofitsfrequenters.
