           "No,IshallcommencewiththeCity. Justringthebellandthemaidwillbringupyourcoffee." 

           AsIwaited,Iliftedtheunopenednewspaperfromthetableandglancedmyeyeoverit. Itresteduponaheadingwhichsentachilltomyheart. 

           "Holmes,"Icried,"youaretoolate." 

           "Ah!"saidhe,layingdownhiscup,"Ifearedasmuch.Howwasitdone?" Hespokecalmly,butIcouldseethathewasdeeplymoved. 

           "MyeyecaughtthenameofOpenshaw,andtheheading‘TragedyNearWaterlooBridge.’Hereistheaccount: 

           "BetweennineandtenlastnightPolice-ConstableCook,oftheHDivision,ondutynearWaterlooBridge,heardacryforhelpandasplashinthewater. Thenight,however,wasextremelydarkandstormy,sothat,inspiteofthehelpofseveralpassers-by,itwasquiteimpossibletoeffectarescue.
