Whyhehaddoneit,whatcouldhaveprovokedhimtosuchabreachofhospitality,andsosuddenlyturnedallhispartialregardfortheirdaughterintoactualillwill,wasamatterwhichtheywereatleastasfarfromdiviningasCatherineherself;butitdidnotoppressthembyanymeanssolong;and,afteraduecourseofuselessconjecture,that“itwasastrangebusiness,andthathemustbeaverystrangeman,”grewenoughforalltheirindignationandwonder;thoughSarahindeedstillindulgedinthesweetsofincomprehensibility,exclaimingandconjecturingwithyouthfulardour.“Mydear,yougiveyourselfagreatdealofneedlesstrouble,”saidhermotheratlast;“dependuponit,itissomethingnotatallworthunderstanding.”
