Reluctantly,andwithmuchhesitation,didshethenbeginwhatmightperhaps,attheendofhalfanhour,betermed,bythecourtesyofherhearers,anexplanation;butscarcely,withinthattime,couldtheyatalldiscoverthecause,orcollecttheparticulars,ofhersuddenreturn.Theywerefarfrombeinganirritablerace;farfromanyquicknessincatching,orbitternessinresenting,affronts:buthere,whenthewholewasunfolded,wasaninsultnottobeoverlooked,nor,forthefirsthalfhour,tobeeasilypardoned.Withoutsufferinganyromanticalarm,intheconsiderationoftheirdaughter’slongandlonelyjourney,Mr.andMrs.Morlandcouldnotbutfeelthatitmighthavebeenproductiveofmuchunpleasantnesstoher;thatitwaswhattheycouldneverhavevoluntarilysuffered;andthat,inforcingheronsuchameasure,GeneralTilneyhadactedneitherhonourablynorfeelingly—neitherasagentlemannorasaparent.
