Thetrapisbaitedbyrollingahandfulofwetmealandcottontogetheruntilitbecomeshard,anddepositingitinthebackpartoftheframe. Afishswimmingthroughtheupraiseddoortowardsthebait,necessarilystrikesoneofthesmallsticksturningthehandle,whichdisplacingthesticksupportingthedoor,thelatterfalls,securingthefishwithintheframe. Takingholdofthetopofthehandle,themovablebottomisthendrawnuptothesurfaceofthewater,andthefishtakenout. Theremayhavebeenothersuchtrapsinusebeforeminewasconstructed,butiftherewereIhadneverhappenedtoseeone. BayouBœufaboundsinfishoflargesizeandexcellentquality,andafterthistimeIwasveryrarelyinwantofoneformyself,orformycomrades. Thusaminewasopened—anewresourcewasdeveloped,hithertounthoughtofbytheenslavedchildrenofAfrica,whotoilandhungeralongtheshoresofthatsluggish,butprolificstream.
