OnlyoncedidI,inmytrances,getahintoftheperiodprecedingthetimespentontheisland.Thisbeginsatthemomentofthebrig’scollisionwiththeiceberg,andIshallnarrateit,iffornootherreason,atleasttogiveanaccountofmycuriouslycoolanddeliberateconduct.Thisconductatthistime,asyoushallsee,waswhatenabledmeintheendtosurvivealoneofalltheship’scompany.
