           “Allquietnow,”reportedtheBirmatotheOlympic,andallquietitwas,exceptforthethrashingandpoundingofascoreofpropellers,andthehissofadozensteelstemsastheyrippedthesmoothwatersoncoursesconvergingtothespotwherethewirelessvoicehadsuddenlyflickeredoutintosilence.

           ButofallthosewhohadbeenlisteningtothesignalsCaptainRostronoftheCarpathiaknewthathisshipwouldmostlikelybeamongthefirsttoreachthespot.ItwasaboutmidnightonSundaythatthepassengersoftheCarpathiafirstbecameawarethatsomethingunusualwashappening.Thecoursehadbeenchangedandacertainhurryingaboutonthedeckstooktheplaceoftheusualmidnightquiet.Thetremblingandvibrationincreasedtoaquickjumpingmovementaspressureofsteamwasgraduallyincreasedandtheenginesurgedtotheextremeoftheirdrivingcapacity.Thechiefstewardsummonedhisstaffandsetthemtoworkmakingsandwichesandpreparinghotdrinks.Allthehotwaterwascutofffromthecabinsandbath-rooms,sothateveryounceofsteamcouldbeutilizedfordrivingthemachinery.

           TheCarpathiawasnearlyseventymilesfromthepositionoftheTitanicwhenshechangedhercourseandturnednorthward;shehadbeensteamingjustoverfourhourswhen,inthelightofthatwonderfuldawn,thoseonthelook-outdescriedasmallboat.Astheydrewnearertheysawotherboats,andfragmentsofwreckage,andmassesoficedriftingaboutthesea.
