           Theironyofchance,themercilessandillogicalselectionwhichdeathmakesinagreatcollectivedisaster,wasexemplifiedoverandoveragaininthedeathsofpeoplewhohadescapedsafelytoaboat,andthesalvationofotherswhowereinvolvedintheverycentreofdestruction.ThestrangestescapeofallwasprobablythatofColonelGracieoftheUnitedStatesarmy,whojumpedfromthetopmostdeckoftheshipwhenshesankandwassuckeddownwithher.Hewasdrawndownforalongwhile,andwhirledroundandround,andwouldhavebeendrawndowntoadepthfromwhichhecouldneverhavecomeupaliveifithadnotbeenfortheexplosionwhichtookplaceaftertheshipsank.
