           Forthemalmostexclusivelywasreservedthatstrangesenseoflookingdownoverthesternoftheshipintotheboilingcommotionofthechurned-upwaters,themaelstromofsnowunderthecountermergingintothepalegreenhighwaythatlaystraightbehindthemtothehorizon,andofknowingthatitwasaroadthatdividedthemfromhome,aroadthatgrewamilelongerwitheverythreeminutesoftheirstormingprogress.Othershipswouldfollowontheroad;othershipswouldturnandcomeagain,anddrivetheirwaystraightbackoverthewhitefoamtowhere,withasuddenplungingandturningofscrewsinthegreenharbourwaterofhome,theroadhadbegun.ButtheywholookedbackfromthesteeragequartersoftheTitanicwouldnotreturn;andthey,aloneofallthepassengersontheship,knewit.

           Andthatisallwecanknoworimagineaboutthem;butitisprobablymorethanmostofthefortunateonesonthesnowyupperdeckscaredtoknoworimagine.Uptherealsothereweredistinctions;someofthetravellersthere,forexample,weresorichthattheywereconspicuousforriches,eveninapopulationlikethis­andIimaginethatthestandardofwealthishigherinthefirst-classpopulationofanAtlanticlinerthaninanyothergroupofpeopleintheworld.Therewerefourmentherewhorepresentedbetweenthemthepossessionofsomeseventymillionsofmoney­JohnJacobAstor,IsidoreStraus,GeorgeD.Widener,andBenjaminGuggenheimtheirnames;anditwassaidthatthereweretwentywhorepresentedafortuneofahundredmillionsbetweenthem­aninteresting,thoughnotanimportant,fact.
