           Yetsucharethetraditionsofthesea,suchisthepowerofthosetraditionsandthespiritofthosewhointerpretthem,thatsomeofthesemen­notall,butsome­remaineddownintheTitanic’sstokeholdslongaftershehadstruck,andlongafterthewater,pouringlikeacataractthroughtherentinherbottomandrisinglikeatideroundtheblackholeswheretheyworked,hadwarnedthemthatherdoom,andprobablytheirs,wassealed.

           Intheengine-roomwereanothergroupofheroes,menofafarhighertype,withfineintelligences,trainedinallthesubtletiesandcraftofmodernships,menwitheducationandimaginationwhocouldseeintheirmind’seyeallthevariationsofhorrorthatmightawaitthem.Thesemenalsocontinuedattheirroutinetasksintheengineroom,knowingperfectlywellthatnopoweronearthcouldsavethem,choosingtostaytherewhiletherewasworktobedoneforthecommongood,theirbesthopebeingpresentlytobedrownedinsteadofbeingboiledorscaldedtodeath.Allthroughtheship,thoughinlessawfulcircumstances,thesamespiritwasbeingobserved;menwhohaddutiestodowentondoingthembecausetheywerethekindofmentowhominsuchanhouritcamemoreeasilytoperformthantoshirktheirduties.
