Thereweretwolargewhiteeggs,andPeterliftedthemupandreflected.Thebirdcoveredherfacewithherwings,soasnottoseethelastofhereggs;butshecouldnothelppeepingbetweenthefeathers.
IforgetwhetherIhavetoldyouthattherewasastaveontherock,drivenintoitbysomebuccaneersoflongagotomarkthesiteofburiedtreasure.Thechildrenhaddiscoveredtheglitteringhoard,andwheninmischievousmoodusedtoflingshowersofmoidores,diamonds,pearlsandpiecesofeighttothegulls,whopounceduponthemforfood,andthenflewaway,ragingatthescurvytrickthathadbeenplayeduponthem.Thestavewasstillthere,andonitStarkeyhadhunghishat,adeeptarpaulin,watertight,withabroadbrim.Peterputtheeggsintothishatandsetitonthelagoon.Itfloatedbeautifully.
TheNeverbirdsawatoncewhathewasupto,andscreamedheradmirationofhim;and,alas,Petercrowedhisagreementwithher.Thenhegotintothenest,rearedthestaveinitasamast,andhunguphisshirtforasail.Atthesamemomentthebirdfluttereddownuponthehatandoncemoresatsnuglyonhereggs.Shedriftedinonedirection,andhewasborneoffinanother,bothcheering
