ThenPetertriedslowanddistinct.
’What—are—you—quacking—about?’andsoon.
TheNeverbirdbecameirritated;theyhaveveryshorttempers.
’Youdunderheadedlittlejay,’shescreamed,’whydon’tyoudoasItellyou?’
Peterfeltthatshewascallinghimnames,andataventureheretortedhotly:
’Soareyou!’
Thenrathercuriouslytheybothsnappedoutthesameremark:
’Shutup!’
’Shutup!’
Neverthelessthebirdwasdeterminedtosavehimifshecould,andbyonelastmightyeffortshepropelledthenestagainsttherock.Thenupsheflew;desertinghereggs,soastomakehermeaningclear.
