           ItwasJones’sfrankscepticismandamusementattheseirresponsibleclaimswhichbrokeupthegrowingcordiality. Rogers,itwasclear,tookhimselfveryseriously;forhenowbecamemoroseandresentful,continuingtotolerateJonesonlythroughadoggedurgetobreakdownhiswallofurbaneandcomplacentincredulity.
