           “You’vehititthere,pard,”theyounghunteranswered. “Ihavearespectforyou,butifyouwerealoneinthisbusinessI’dthinktwicebeforeIputmyheadintosuchahornet’snest. It’sLucythatbringsmehere,andbeforeharmcomesonherIguesstherewillbeonelesso’theHopefamilyinUtah.” 

           “Whatarewetodo?” 

           “To-morrowisyourlastday,andunlessyouactto-nightyouarelost. IhaveamuleandtwohorseswaitingintheEagleRavine. Howmuchmoneyhaveyou?” 

           “Twothousanddollarsingold,andfiveinnotes.” 

           “Thatwilldo. Ihaveasmuchmoretoaddtoit. WemustpushforCarsonCitythroughthemountains. YouhadbestwakeLucy. Itisaswellthattheservantsdonotsleepinthehouse.” 

           WhileFerrierwasabsent,preparinghisdaughterfortheapproachingjourney,JeffersonHopepackedalltheeatablesthathecouldfindintoasmallparcel,andfilledastonewarejarwithwater,forheknewbyexperiencethatthemountainwellswerefewandfarbetween. Hehadhardlycompletedhisarrangementsbeforethefarmerreturnedwithhisdaughteralldressedandreadyforastart.
