“To-morrowisyourlastday,andunlessyouactto-nightyouarelost. IhaveamuleandtwohorseswaitingintheEagleRavine. Howmuchmoneyhaveyou?”

“Thatwilldo. Ihaveasmuchmoretoaddtoit. WemustpushforCarsonCitythroughthemountains. YouhadbestwakeLucy. Itisaswellthattheservantsdonotsleepinthehouse.”
WhileFerrierwasabsent,preparinghisdaughterfortheapproachingjourney,JeffersonHopepackedalltheeatablesthathecouldfindintoasmallparcel,andfilledastonewarejarwithwater,forheknewbyexperiencethatthemountainwellswerefewandfarbetween. Hehadhardlycompletedhisarrangementsbeforethefarmerreturnedwithhisdaughteralldressedandreadyforastart.
