Thesupplyofadultwomenwasrunningshort,andpolygamywithoutafemalepopulationonwhichtodrawwasabarrendoctrineindeed. Strangerumoursbegantobebandiedabout—rumoursofmurderedimmigrantsandrifledcampsinregionswhereIndianshadneverbeenseen. FreshwomenappearedintheharemsoftheElders—womenwhopinedandwept,andboreupontheirfacesthetracesofanunextinguishablehorror. Belatedwanderersuponthemountainsspokeofgangsofarmedmen,masked,stealthy,andnoiseless,whoflittedbytheminthedarkness. Thesetalesandrumourstooksubstanceandshape,andwerecorroboratedandre-corroborated,untiltheyresolvedthemselvesintoadefinitename.
