EarlyinAugustthatsearchtookplace,andWardwentcarefullyoverthewallsofeveryroomsizeableenoughtohavebeenbyanypossibilitythelibraryoftheevilbuilder.Hepaidespecialattentiontothelargepanelsofsuchovermantelsasstillremained;andwaskeenlyexcitedafteraboutanhour,whenonabroadareaabovethefireplaceinaspaciousground-floorroomhebecamecertainthatthesurfacebroughtoutbythepeelingofseveralcoatsofpaintwassensiblydarkerthananyordinaryinteriorpaintorthewoodbeneathitwaslikelytohavebeen.Afewmorecarefultestswithathinknife,andheknewthathehadcomeuponanoilportraitofgreatextent.
