CertaindocumentsbyandaboutallofthestrangecharacterswereavailableattheEssexInstitute,theCourtHouse,andtheRegistryofDeeds,andincludedbothharmlesscommonplacessuchaslandtitlesandbillsofsale,andfurtivefragmentsofamoreprovocativenature.Therewerefourorfiveunmistakableallusionstothemonthewitchcrafttrialrecords;aswhenoneHepzibahLawsonsworeonJuly10,1692,attheCourtofOyerandTerminerunderJudgeHathorne,that:’fortieWitchesandtheBlackeManwerewonttomeeteintheWoodesbehindMr.Hutchinson’shouse’,andoneAmityHowdeclaredatasessionofAugust8thbeforeJudgeGedneythat:’Mr.G.B.(Rev.GeorgeBurroughs)onthatNighteputtyeDivellhisMarkeuponBridgetS.,JonathanA.,SimonO.
