           Beforethis,WardhadbeencontenttolethisromancingaboutoldJosephCurwenremainintheidlestage;buthavingdiscoveredhisownrelationshiptothisapparently"hushed-up"character,heproceededtohuntoutassystematicallyaspossiblewhateverhemightfindconcerninghim.Inthisexcitedquestheeventuallysucceededbeyondhishighestexpectations;foroldletters,diaries,andsheavesofunpublishedmemoirsincobwebbedProvidencegarretsandelsewhereyieldedmanyilluminatingpassageswhichtheirwritershadnotthoughtitworththeirwhiletodestroy.OneimportantsidelightcamefromapointasremoteasNewYork,wheresomeRhodeIslandcolonialcorrespondencewasstoredintheMuseumatFraunces’Tavern.Thereallycrucialthing,though,andwhatinDr,Willett’sopinionformedthedefinitesourceofWard’sundoing,wasthematterfoundinAugust1919behindthepanelingofthecrumblinghouseinOlneyCourt
