November3.—Goodnewsatlast.Mr.PerkupphasgotanappointmentforLupin,andheistogoandseeaboutitonMonday.Oh,howmymindisrelieved!IwenttoLupin’sroomtotakethegoodnewstohim,buthewasinbed,veryseedy,soIresolvedtokeepitovertilltheevening.

Lupinthensaid:“Filluptheglassesagain,forIhavesomegoodandunexpectednewsforyou.”
Ihadsomeslightmisgivings,andsoevidentlyhadCarrie,forshesaid:“Ihopeweshallthinkitgoodnews.”
Lupinsaid:“Oh,it’sallright!I’mengagedtobemarried!”
