Sarahcameup,andsaiditwasMrs.MurrayPoshandMr.Lupin.
Thiswasquitearelief.IwentdownwithCarrie,andLupinmetmewiththeremark:“Isay,whatdidyourunawayfromthewindowfor?Didwefrightenyou?”
Ifoolishlysaid:“Whatwindow?”
Lupinsaid:“Oh,youknow.Shutit.YoulookedasifyouwereplayingatPunchandJudy.”
OnCarrieaskingifshecouldofferthemanything,Lupinsaid:“Oh,IthinkDaisywilltakeonacupoftea.IcandowithaB.andS.”
Isaid:“Iamafraidwehavenosoda.”
Lupinsaid:“Don’tbotheraboutthat.Youjusttripoutandholdthehorse;Idon’tthinkSarahunderstandsit.”
Theystayedaveryshorttime,andastheywereleaving,Lupinsaid:“IwantyoubothtocomeanddinewithmenextWednesday,andseemynewplace.Mr.andMrs.MurrayPosh,MissPosh(Murray’ssister)arecoming.Eighto’clocksharp.Nooneelse.”
Isaidwedidnotpretendtobefashionablepeople,andwouldlikethedinnerearlier,asitmadeitsolatebeforewegothome.
Lupinsaid:“Rats!Youmustgetusedtoit.Ifitcomestothat,DaisyandIcandriveyouhome.”
Wepromisedtogo;butImustsayinmysimplemindthefamiliarwayinwhichMrs.PoshandLupinaddressedeachotherisreprehensible.Anybodywouldthinktheyhadbeenchildrentogether.Icertainlyshouldobjecttoasixmonths’acquaintancecallingmywife“Carrie,”anddrivingoutwithher.
