AlittlefurtherperseveranceinpatienceandforcedcheerfulnessonAnne’ssideproducednearlyacureonMary’s.Shecouldsoonsituprightonthesofa,andbegantohopeshemightbeabletoleaveitbydinner-time.Then,forgettingtothinkofit,shewasattheotherendoftheroom,beautifyinganosegay;then,sheatehercoldmeat;andthenshewaswellenoughtoproposealittlewalk.
“Whereshallwego?”saidshe,whentheywereready.“IsupposeyouwillnotliketocallattheGreatHousebeforetheyhavebeentoseeyou?”
“Ihavenotthesmallestobjectiononthataccount,”repliedAnne.“IshouldneverthinkofstandingonsuchceremonywithpeopleIknowsowellasMrsandtheMissMusgroves.”
“Oh!buttheyoughttocalluponyouassoonaspossible.Theyoughttofeelwhatisduetoyouasmysister.However,wemayaswellgoandsitwiththemalittlewhile,andwhenwehavethatover,wecanenjoyourwalk.”
Annehadalwaysthoughtsuchastyleofintercoursehighlyimprudent;butshehadceasedtoendeavourtocheckit,frombelievingthat,thoughtherewereoneachsidecontinualsubjectsofoffence,neitherfamilycouldnowdowithoutit.TotheGreatHouseaccordinglytheywent,tositthefullhalfhourintheold-fashionedsquareparlour,withasmallcarpetandshiningfloor,towhichthepresentdaughtersofthehouseweregraduallygivingtheproperairofconfusionbyagrandpiano-forteandaharp,flower-standsandlittletablesplacedineverydirection.
