           Butinthiscase,Annehadleftnothingforadvicetodo;andthoughLadyRussell,assatisfiedaseverwithherowndiscretion,neverwishedthepastundone,shebegannowtohavetheanxietywhichbordersonhopelessnessforAnne’sbeingtempted,bysomemanoftalentsandindependence,toenterastateforwhichsheheldhertobepeculiarlyfittedbyherwarmaffectionsanddomestichabits.

           Theyknewnoteachother’sopinion,eitheritsconstancyoritschange,ontheoneleadingpointofAnne’sconduct,forthesubjectwasneveralludedto;butAnne,atseven-and-twenty,thoughtverydifferentlyfromwhatshehadbeenmadetothinkatnineteen.ShedidnotblameLadyRussell,shedidnotblameherselfforhavingbeenguidedbyher;butshefeltthatwereanyyoungperson,insimilarcircumstances,toapplytoherforcounsel,theywouldneverreceiveanyofsuchcertainimmediatewretchedness,suchuncertainfuturegood.Shewaspersuadedthatundereverydisadvantageofdisapprobationathome,andeveryanxietyattendinghisprofession,alltheirprobablefears,delays,anddisappointments,sheshouldyethavebeenahappierwomaninmaintainingtheengagement,thanshehadbeeninthesacrificeofit;andthis,shefullybelieved,hadtheusualshare,hadevenmorethantheusualshareofallsuchsolicitudesandsuspensebeentheirs,withoutreferencetotheactualresultsoftheircase,which,asithappened,wouldhavebestowedearlierprosperitythancouldbereasonablycalculatedon.Allhissanguineexpectations,allhisconfidencehadbeenjustified.
