Hewantedtoanimatehercuriosityagainastohowandwherehecouldhaveheardherformerlypraised;wantedverymuchtobegratifiedbymoresolicitation;butthecharmwasbroken:hefoundthattheheatandanimationofapublicroomwasnecessarytokindlehismodestcousin’svanity;hefound,atleast,thatitwasnottobedonenow,byanyofthoseattemptswhichhecouldhazardamongthetoo-commandingclaimsoftheothers.Helittlesurmisedthatitwasasubjectactingnowexactlyagainsthisinterest,bringingimmediatelytoherthoughtsallthosepartsofhisconductwhichwereleastexcusable.
ShehadsomesatisfactioninfindingthathewasreallygoingoutofBaththenextmorning,goingearly,andthathewouldbegonethegreaterpartoftwodays.HewasinvitedagaintoCamdenPlacetheveryeveningofhisreturn;butfromThursdaytoSaturdayeveninghisabsencewascertain.ItwasbadenoughthataMrsClayshouldbealwaysbeforeher;butthatadeeperhypocriteshouldbeaddedtotheirparty,seemedthedestructionofeverythinglikepeaceandcomfort.
