           “Ihadnotthesmallestintentionofaskinghim,”saidElizabeth,withaffectedcarelessness,“buthegavesomanyhints;soMrsClaysays,atleast.”

           “Indeed,Idosayit.Ineversawanybodyinmylifespellharderforaninvitation.Poorman!Iwasreallyinpainforhim;foryourhard-heartedsister,MissAnne,seemsbentoncruelty.”

           “Oh!”criedElizabeth,“Ihavebeenrathertoomuchusedtothegametobesoonovercomebyagentleman’shints.However,whenIfoundhowexcessivelyhewasregrettingthatheshouldmissmyfatherthismorning,Igavewayimmediately,forIwouldneverreallyomitanopportunityofbringhimandSirWaltertogether.Theyappeartosomuchadvantageincompanywitheachother.Eachbehavingsopleasantly.MrElliotlookingupwithsomuchrespect.”

           “Quitedelightful!”criedMrsClay,notdaring,however,toturnhereyestowardsAnne.“Exactlylikefatherandson!DearMissElliot,mayInotsayfatherandson?”

           “MydearMissElliot!”exclaimedMrsClay,liftingherhandsandeyes,andsinkingalltherestofherastonishmentinaconvenientsilence.
