Eitherfromtheconsciousness,however,thathisfriendhadrecovered,orfromotherconsciousness,hewentnofarther;andAnnewho,inspiteoftheagitatedvoiceinwhichthelatterparthadbeenuttered,andinspiteofallthevariousnoisesoftheroom,thealmostceaselessslamofthedoor,andceaselessbuzzofpersonswalkingthrough,haddistinguishedeveryword,wasstruck,gratified,confused,andbeginningtobreatheveryquick,andfeelanhundredthingsinamoment.Itwasimpossibleforhertoenteronsuchasubject;andyet,afterapause,feelingthenecessityofspeaking,andhavingnotthesmallestwishforatotalchange,sheonlydeviatedsofarastosay—
“YouwereagoodwhileatLyme,Ithink?”

“IshouldverymuchliketoseeLymeagain,”saidAnne.
