           SirWalterwouldquitKellynchHall;andafteraveryfewdaysmoreofdoubtandindecision,thegreatquestionofwhitherheshouldgowassettled,andthefirstoutlineofthisimportantchangemadeout.

           Therehadbeenthreealternatives,London,Bath,oranotherhouseinthecountry.AllAnne’swisheshadbeenforthelatter.Asmallhouseintheirownneighbourhood,wheretheymightstillhaveLadyRussell’ssociety,stillbenearMary,andstillhavethepleasureofsometimesseeingthelawnsandgrovesofKellynch,wastheobjectofherambition.ButtheusualfateofAnneattendedher,inhavingsomethingveryoppositefromherinclinationfixedon.ShedislikedBath,anddidnotthinkitagreedwithher;andBathwastobeherhome.

           SirWalterhadatfirstthoughtmoreofLondon;butMrShepherdfeltthathecouldnotbetrustedinLondon,andhadbeenskilfulenoughtodissuadehimfromit,andmakeBathpreferred.Itwasamuchsaferplaceforagentlemaninhispredicament:hemighttherebeimportantatcomparativelylittleexpense.TwomaterialadvantagesofBathoverLondonhadofcoursebeengivenalltheirweight:itsmoreconvenientdistancefromKellynch,onlyfiftymiles,andLadyRussell’sspendingsomepartofeverywinterthere;andtotheverygreatsatisfactionofLadyRussell,whosefirstviewsontheprojectedchangehadbeenforBath,SirWalterandElizabethwereinducedtobelievethattheyshouldloseneitherconsequencenorenjoymentbysettlingthere.
