SirWalterhadatfirstthoughtmoreofLondon;butMrShepherdfeltthathecouldnotbetrustedinLondon,andhadbeenskilfulenoughtodissuadehimfromit,andmakeBathpreferred.Itwasamuchsaferplaceforagentlemaninhispredicament:hemighttherebeimportantatcomparativelylittleexpense.TwomaterialadvantagesofBathoverLondonhadofcoursebeengivenalltheirweight:itsmoreconvenientdistancefromKellynch,onlyfiftymiles,andLadyRussell’sspendingsomepartofeverywinterthere;andtotheverygreatsatisfactionofLadyRussell,whosefirstviewsontheprojectedchangehadbeenforBath,SirWalterandElizabethwereinducedtobelievethattheyshouldloseneitherconsequencenorenjoymentbysettlingthere.
