Anhour’scompleteleisureforsuchreflectionsasthese,onadarkNovemberday,asmallthickrainalmostblottingouttheveryfewobjectsevertobediscernedfromthewindows,wasenoughtomakethesoundofLadyRussell’scarriageexceedinglywelcome;andyet,thoughdesiroustobegone,shecouldnotquittheMansionHouse,orlookanadieutotheCottage,withitsblack,drippingandcomfortlessveranda,orevennoticethroughthemistyglassesthelasthumbletenementsofthevillage,withoutasaddenedheart.SceneshadpassedinUppercrosswhichmadeitprecious.Itstoodtherecordofmanysensationsofpain,oncesevere,butnowsoftened;andofsomeinstancesofrelentingfeeling,somebreathingsoffriendshipandreconciliation,whichcouldneverbelookedforagain,andwhichcouldneverceasetobedear.Sheleftitallbehindher,allbuttherecollectionthatsuchthingshadbeen.
AnnehadneverenteredKellynchsinceherquittingLadyRussell’shouseinSeptember.Ithadnotbeennecessary,andthefewoccasionsofitsbeingpossibleforhertogototheHallshehadcontrivedtoevadeandescapefrom.HerfirstreturnwastoresumeherplaceinthemodernandelegantapartmentsoftheLodge,andtogladdentheeyesofitsmistress.
