WhileCaptainsWentworthandHarvilleledthetalkononesideoftheroom,andbyrecurringtoformerdays,suppliedanecdotesinabundancetooccupyandentertaintheothers,itfelltoAnne’slottobeplacedratherapartwithCaptainBenwick;andaverygoodimpulseofhernatureobligedhertobeginanacquaintancewithhim.Hewasshy,anddisposedtoabstraction;buttheengagingmildnessofhercountenance,andgentlenessofhermanners,soonhadtheireffect;andAnnewaswellrepaidthefirsttroubleofexertion.Hewasevidentlyayoungmanofconsiderabletasteinreading,thoughprincipallyinpoetry;andbesidesthepersuasionofhavinggivenhimatleastanevening’sindulgenceinthediscussionofsubjects,whichhisusualcompanionshadprobablynoconcernin,shehadthehopeofbeingofrealusetohiminsomesuggestionsastothedutyandbenefitofstrugglingagainstaffliction,whichhadnaturallygrownoutoftheirconversation.
