ShetriedtodissuadeMaryfromgoing,butinvain;andthatbeingthecase,thoughtitbesttoaccepttheMissMusgroves’muchmorecordialinvitationtoherselftogolikewise,asshemightbeusefulinturningbackwithhersister,andlesseningtheinterferenceinanyplanoftheirown.
“IcannotimaginewhytheyshouldsupposeIshouldnotlikealongwalk,”saidMary,asshewentupstairs.“EverybodyisalwayssupposingthatIamnotagoodwalker;andyettheywouldnothavebeenpleased,ifwehadrefusedtojointhem.Whenpeoplecomeinthismanneronpurposetoaskus,howcanonesayno?”
Justastheyweresettingoff,thegentlemenreturned.Theyhadtakenoutayoungdog,whohadspoilttheirsport,andsentthembackearly.Theirtimeandstrength,andspirits,were,therefore,exactlyreadyforthiswalk,andtheyenteredintoitwithpleasure.CouldAnnehaveforeseensuchajunction,shewouldhavestaidathome;but,fromsomefeelingsofinterestandcuriosity,shefanciednowthatitwastoolatetoretract,andthewholesixsetforwardtogetherinthedirectionchosenbytheMissMusgroves,whoevidentlyconsideredthewalkasundertheirguidance.
Anne’sobjectwas,nottobeinthewayofanybody;andwherethenarrowpathsacrossthefieldsmademanyseparationsnecessary,tokeepwithherbrotherandsister.
