           “There’sanicehusbandforyou,Mrs.Malins.”

           WhileshewasthreadingherwaybackacrosstheroomMrs.Malins,withoutadvertingtotheinterruption,wentontotellGabrielwhatbeautifulplacestherewereinScotlandandbeautifulscenery.Herson-in-lawbroughtthemeveryyeartothelakesandtheyusedtogofishing.Herson-in-lawwasasplendidfisher.Onedayhecaughtabeautifulbigfishandthemaninthehotelcookeditfortheirdinner.

           Gabrielhardlyheardwhatshesaid.Nowthatsupperwascomingnearhebegantothinkagainabouthisspeechandaboutthequotation.WhenhesawFreddyMalinscomingacrosstheroomtovisithismotherGabrielleftthechairfreeforhimandretiredintotheembrasureofthewindow.Theroomhadalreadyclearedandfromthebackroomcametheclatterofplatesandknives.Thosewhostillremainedinthedrawingroomseemedtiredofdancingandwereconversingquietlyinlittlegroups.Gabriel’swarmtremblingfingerstappedthecoldpaneofthewindow.
