           Sheansweredplacidlythatshehadhadabeautifulcrossingandthatthecaptainhadbeenmostattentivetoher.ShespokealsoofthebeautifulhouseherdaughterkeptinGlasgow,andofallthefriendstheyhadthere.WhilehertonguerambledonGabrieltriedtobanishfromhismindallmemoryoftheunpleasantincidentwithMissIvors.Ofcoursethegirlorwoman,orwhatevershewas,wasanenthusiastbuttherewasatimeforallthings.Perhapsheoughtnottohaveansweredherlikethat.ButshehadnorighttocallhimaWestBritonbeforepeople,eveninjoke.Shehadtriedtomakehimridiculousbeforepeople,hecklinghimandstaringathimwithherrabbit’seyes.

           Hesawhiswifemakingherwaytowardshimthroughthewaltzingcouples.Whenshereachedhimshesaidintohisear:

           “Gabriel.AuntKatewantstoknowwon’tyoucarvethegooseasusual.MissDalywillcarvethehamandI’lldothepudding.”

           “Allright,”saidGabriel.

           “She’ssendingintheyoungeronesfirstassoonasthiswaltzisoversothatwe’llhavethetabletoourselves.”

           “Wereyoudancing?”askedGabriel.

           “OfcourseIwas.Didn’tyouseeme?WhatrowhadyouwithMollyIvors?”

           “Norow.Why?Didshesayso?”
